 The College of Cardinals took only 2 days to choose the successor to John Paul II. The crowd clapped as the smoke billowed over Vatican City and waited for the ringing of bells. At 6:43 p.m. Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez announced Ratzinger's election in Latin. Bush called Benedict XVI 'a man of great wisdom and knowledge'.
