It had been hoped miners, trapped at 1.25 miles inside the mine, might have survived if air pockets were present. But now Grupo Mexico has told relatives there is no further hope. Tests of air in the mine showed there was not enough oxygen to survive. The men were trapped when a methane explosion brought down debris and cut them off.

8 miners who had been near the mine's exit were rescued and hospitalized. There were 65 miners trapped throughout the mine, near the town of Sabinas. Rescuers had not been able to make contact with the trapped miners. Grupo Mexico owns the mine. Rescue teams were taking turns removing debris that had clogged the steep shaft.
