  Sirens wailed through the city before dawn to mark the moment when the Great Quake struck, shattering the city
 On 18 April 1906 a 7.8 quake shook the San Andreas fault for just under a minute. About 3,000 people died. The quake was touching off fires that burned for days. 11 centenarians who survived the devastation were joined by thousands for a memorial ceremony to remember one of the U.S. worst natural disasters
