| Sochi secured 51 votes at a meeting of International Olympic Committee delegates, beating its South Korean rival by just 4 votes. The IOC has received the applications of seven cities to bid for the honor of hosting the event. On June 22, 2006, the Executive Board of the IOC narrowed the field to three candidate cities: Sochi, Russia; Salzburg, Austria; and PyeongChang, Republic of Korea.
